Jennifer Shirkey and Cathy Welsh Named Vice Chairs of the MS Dinner of Champions Honoring Jack Broaddus and Dr. Karen Wigginton
Flora Pettit is delighted to announce that Jennifer Shirkey and Cathy Welsh agreed to serve as Vice Chairs for the MS Dinner of Champions scheduled May 21, 2020, to honor Jack Broaddus (President and CEO, Sunnyside Communities) and Dr. Karen Wigginton (VP- Corporate Marketing and Communications, Sunnyside Communities.) The event provides an opportunity to thank these two community leaders and to raise money to help fight multiple sclerosis. To date, the Harrisonburg Dinner of Champions has raised more than $2.1 million to support local programs and fund MS research.
Flora Pettit is pleased to join the United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County and other local organizations in collecting the most needed items for nonprofits in our community. We are focusing on collecting paper products and hats and gloves for children to use this winter. We are always thankful for opportunities to make a difference in our community, and we are especially happy to participate during this holiday season. We will be dropping off donations to the United Way on December 20th.

Flora Pettit proudly announces that fifteen of its attorneys have been recognized in the 2019 “Legal Elite” survey conducted annually by Virginia Business magazine. Statewide, only approximately 1,133 lawyers of the approximate 31,177 active Virginia State Bar members were named this year.
Richard Howard-Smith Authors an Article Published in the Fall 2019 Newsletter of the Virginia State Bar’s Trusts and Estates Section
Richard Howard-Smith recently wrote an article entitled “Protecting an Estate Plan from Disruption,” published in the Fall 2019 Newsletter of the Virginia State Bar’s Trusts and Estates Section. This article is the follow-up to his Fall 2018 article “Disrupting an Estate Plan” published in the same periodical. In Part Two, Richard reviews possible solutions for testators who wish to provide more protection against revisions to their estate plans by beneficiaries who intend to disrupt their express intentions.
In November, Flora Pettit reflects with gratitude regarding its clients, staff and attorneys. We are blessed to practice law in Virginia with the colleagues we have and the clients we are very proud to serve. We have become more aware of the problem of food insecurity in Virginia having participated in the Attorney General’s Legal Food Frenzy for the last several years and felt an additional contribution, at this time of year, was very appropriate. We wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.
